Effect of aroclor 1242 (PCB) on the reproductive function of adult male rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta)

Ahmad M , Ahmad S , Tariq S

Adult male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were given oral treatment of either Aroclor 1242 or vehicle (corn oil and glycerol) at a dose of 200 microgram/kg bw/day/animal for six months to investigate the effect of pollutant on plasma testosterone and morphology of testis and accessory glands. The animals used in this research have been treated humanely according to institutional guidelines, with due consideration to the alleviation of distress and discomfort. Aroclor 1242 tre...

Joseph F , Ul-Haq M , Ahmad A , Whittingham P , White H , Wallace A , Fraser W , Vora J

Background: Untreated adult growth hormone deficiency (AGHD) is associated with hypertension, obesity and hyperleptinemia. Leptin is linked to obesity related hypertension, is secreted in a circadian rhythm and may contribute to the regulation of BP circadian rhythmicity. Methods: We studied the relationship between plasma leptin (half hourly samples), ambulatory systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) over a 24-h period in ...

To identify genes causing hypercalciuria, we screened male offspring of C57BL/6J male mice mutagenised by N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) for this abnormality. Mice were kept in accordance with UK Home Office welfare guidelines and project licence restrictions. Metabolic cage studies were performed to collect 24-hour urine samples, and this revealed one mouse with hypercalciuria (Hcalc1). Inheritance testing demonstrated that Hcalc1 was inherited as an autosomal domi...
